Verizon Wireless Pressed To Modify 'Anytime, Anywhere' Claims At press time, the National Advertising Division (NAD) of the Council of Better Business Bureaus, Inc., the advertising industry's self-regulatory forum, urged Verizon Wireless to "modify or discontinue" claims made in its ad campaign pushing its new, family-oriented "IN-Network" calling plan.

Verizon Wireless Reports Glitch in Online Billing System
Verizon Wireless , the US mobile operator owned by Verizon Communications and Vodafone Group, had a flaw in its online billing system that could have allowed customers to view account information on other customers, the Washington Post reported on its Web site.

NAD is an investigative arm of the advertising industry's voluntary selfregulation program, and it addresses competitive challenges from other advertisers and from consumers. Rival carrier Nextel Communications, which objected to Verizon Wireless' use of the terms "anytime, anywhere", brought the truth and accuracy of the advertiser's claims to NAD's attention.
Following its investigation, NAD determined that Verizon's use of the brand "IN-Network" was not misleading. Verizon Wireless itself says it "believed that it provided proper qualification for the claim, and had distinguished in its advertising between the location of the caller and the location of the recipient."
While acknowledging Verizon Wireless' efforts to clarify the consumer information contained not only in its IN-Network ads but in all of its advertising, NAD still recommends the carrier "modify or discontinue its 'anytime, anywhere' claim to avoid potential consumer confusion and to avoid potentially conveying the inaccurate and overly broad message that Verizon Wireless subscribers could make free calls to any Verizon customer from anywhere in the nation." In turn, Verizon Wireless now says it will "take NAD's concerns relating to this phrase into account in future advertising."
