UPDATE: Cingular, Verizon to Share Picture Messages

Picture messaging is no fun if your friends don't get the pics, and for Verizon camera phone owners trying to send images to other carriers' phones, that's been a problem.

At the CTIA show here in New Orleans, Cingular and Verizon announced that they're connecting their picture-messaging networks to each other, allowing nearly 100 million wireless subscribers to send images back and forth.

This is true picture messaging, according to Verizon spokesman Jeff Nelson.

You'll see camera phone images right on your handset, no matter which of the two carriers you use (as long,of course, as your handset and plan support picture messaging.) We've also heard reports that video messaging is working one way, from Cingular customers to Verizon phones, though the operators wouldn't confirm that.

The Verizon/Cingular alliance marks the first, real, official cross-carrier picture messaging in the US. Last year, AT&T Wireless and T-Mobile tested interoperability for a while; we were unable to check it today, but T-Mobile told us they don't officially support interoperability. Sprint, meanwhile, sends other carriers' subscribers a text message with a link to a URL where they can view a picture, rather than sending a true picture message.

"We found that once text messaging was interoperable, that was the growth curve," Nelson said. "When we went live and interoperable with text messaging, the traffic through our network tripled overnight because people are already trying it. They don't know whose carrier their friends have."

Research in Motion, the Blackberry people, are heading in another direction: expanding its strength in text-based messaging to cover Instant Messaging. Future Blackberries, RIM announced at the show, will include AIM, ICQ and Yahoo! messaging clients. Right now, you can get IM clients as third-party solutions but they don't come prepackaged on most Blackberries; the 7100t is an IM-enabled exception.
