Sprint Nextel Planning Local Phone Unit Spinoff
The companies announced plans to spin off the local phone business -- which was owned by the former Sprint -- when they unveiled their merger in December. It also said the local telephone company would have about $7.25 billion in debt once its spinoff is completed.

WASHINGTON -- The merger of Sprint Corp. and Nextel Communications Inc. closed Friday, creating a company with more than 44 million mobile- phone subscribers. The new Sprint Nextel Corp., with headquarters in suburban Reston, Va., and about 80,000 employees nationwide, is betting on the explosion in wireless communications and will shed its slower-growing local telephone business.
