CDMA RAZR On its Way

Will Sprint get the RAZR? Motorola dropped a possible bombshell at the CTIA wireless trade show yesterday afternoon when they announced a CDMA version of their popular RAZR phone. So far in the US, the RAZR has been exclusive to Cingular.

The CDMA RAZR, which also packs a megapixel camera (that's better than the Cingular RAZR's VGA camera), is coming first to Korea this summer, but Motorola executives said they hope to bring it to the US at the beginning of 2006.

Given that the RAZR already packs Java technology and has a built-in antenna, both of which are Sprint preferences, it's more likely to come to that network than to Verizon's.

Motorola also announced the MS550, a beefy-looking slider phone with a flip-out, 3-megapixel camera lens, a real flash, and optical zoom. That would be amazing if it came to the US, but we think that it will join LG's 5-megapixel camera phone and Samsung's 7-megapixel model on sale in Asia, never touching these shores.

The US will get the Motorola SLVR V280, though, a gorgeous little slab phone that Motorola announced last week and we got to hold at this show. The SLVR really does feel like a cousin of the RAZR, and it will be much cheaper. Expect the sleek SLVR to show up late this fall with a GSM carrier, probably Cingular.

The Motorola V557, meanwhile, follows up on the Editor's Choice V551 by adding Screen3, a strange-but-interesting "push" technology that lets news headlines or weather information run onto the phone's idle screen. Think of it as like PointCast, the old information-bearing screensaver, for phones.

There wasn't much news from Nextel at this show, but we got a peek at the push-to-talk carrier's roadmap while we were at the Motorola booth. Nextel phones scheduled for the next quarter include the inexpensive, bar-style camera phone the i275; the sleek, catlike i836; the rugged i355, which has an off-network walkie-talkie and the ability to form conference calls on the fly; and the i605, Nextel's first Bluetooth phone. The i930, Nextel's first smartphone, is currently scheduled for early this fall, though we've seen that phone pushed back before, so we're not holding our breath.
